User Guide
Escape Artist is a ring modulator with three carrier modes, character processing, and a comb filter. Multiply your audio with a carrier signal, shape it with saturation or wavefolding, and add pitched resonance through comb filtering.
Quick Start
Get up and running in four steps:
- Load Escape Artist as an audio effect on any track
- Set Lock Point to choose the carrier frequency
- Select a carrier mode (Formant, Stoch, or Swarm) and adjust its parameters
- Blend with MIX and optionally enable the comb filter or character processing
What It Does
Escape Artist multiplies your audio with a carrier oscillator, producing sum and difference frequencies that create metallic, vowel-like, or textural effects. Three carrier modes offer different flavors of modulation. A character stage adds saturation or wavefolding, and a comb filter adds pitched resonance.
Typical Uses
- Drum textures — Add tonal or metallic character to kicks, snares, and hats
- Vowel effects — Formant mode shapes vowel-like resonances across any source
- Rhythmic motion — Tempo-synced modulation of carrier frequency or amplitude
- Sound design — Stochastic and swarm carriers create evolving, unpredictable textures
Signal Flow
Audio flows through a linear chain of processing stages:
Input → IN Gain → Ring Mod (carrier x signal) → Character → Comb Filter → Trigger Gate → MIX → OUT Gain → WIDTH → Output
The ring modulator is the core — it multiplies the input signal by the carrier oscillator. Everything downstream shapes and colors the result. The motion system can modulate the carrier frequency or amplitude at tempo-synced rates.
Global Controls
Four dials along the left edge control the overall signal level and stereo image.
| Parameter | Range | Description |
|---|---|---|
| IN | -12 to +12 dB | Input gain before processing |
| MIX | 0-100% | Dry/wet blend (0% = bypass, 100% = fully processed) |
| OUT | -24 to +12 dB | Output gain after processing |
| WIDTH | 0-200% | Stereo width via mid/side processing (100% = unchanged) |
Lock Point
The Lock Point dial sets the fundamental pitch of the carrier oscillator, from 40 Hz to 5000 Hz. This is the base frequency that all three carrier modes use as their starting point.
Lower Lock Point values (40-200 Hz) produce subtle, bass-heavy modulation. Higher values (1000-5000 Hz) create more aggressive, metallic tones. Try matching Lock Point to the key of your track for more musical results.
Motion
The motion system applies tempo-synced LFO modulation to the carrier. Toggle it on/off and choose whether to modulate frequency or amplitude.
| Parameter | Range | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Enable | On/Off | Toggle motion modulation |
| Target | Frequency / Amplitude | What the LFO modulates |
| Rate | 4 bars to 1/8 triplet | Tempo-synced LFO speed |
| Shape | Sine, Triangle, Saw, Square, S&H | LFO waveform |
| Depth | 0-100% | Modulation amount |
LFO Shapes
- Sine — Smooth, organic sweeps
- Triangle — Linear, symmetrical motion
- Saw — Rising ramp with instant reset
- Square — Alternates between two values
- S&H — Random sample-and-hold, new value each cycle
Carrier Modes
The carrier oscillator operates in one of three modes. Use the mode selector to choose, or enable Cycle to auto-rotate through modes at tempo. All modes share an ENV control that scales the carrier by input dynamics — higher values make the ring mod effect more responsive to playing level.
Formant
Shapes the carrier through vowel-like resonant peaks, producing speech-like coloring.
- Position — Selects the vowel formant (sweeps through vowel shapes)
- Width — Formant bandwidth (narrow = resonant, wide = diffuse)
- Morph — Smooth interpolation between adjacent formant positions
Stoch (Stochastic)
Randomizes carrier frequencies around the Lock Point for noisy, textural modulation.
- Spread — Frequency scatter range around Lock Point
- Density — Rate of random frequency changes
- Smooth — Interpolation between random values (0 = stepped, 100 = glided)
Swarm
Stacks multiple detuned oscillators into dense spectral clouds.
- Count — Number of oscillators in the swarm
- Spread — Detuning amount between oscillators
- Drift — Random pitch wandering over time
Cycle
When Cycle is enabled, the carrier mode auto-rotates through Formant, Stoch, and Swarm at the host tempo. This creates variation across bars without manual switching.
Character
Four character modes shape the signal after ring modulation. Click to select. Switching is beat-quantized when the transport is playing.
| Mode | Description |
|---|---|
| Clean | Bypass — ring mod output passes through unaltered |
| Grit | Hard saturation with presence boost in upper mids |
| Warm | Low-end emphasis with tube-style saturation |
| Fold | Multi-stage wavefolding for complex harmonic content |
The INTENSITY dial controls the amount of the selected character effect (inactive in Clean mode).
Comb Filter
A resonant comb filter after the character stage. Creates pitched metallic resonance, flanging, and Karplus-Strong-like effects.
| Parameter | Range | Description |
|---|---|---|
| FEEDBACK | 0-0.95 | Comb resonance amount (higher = more tonal, longer decay) |
| TUNING | 20-5000 Hz | Resonant frequency of the comb filter |
| MIX | 0-100% | Comb filter wet/dry blend |
Match comb TUNING to your Lock Point frequency for reinforced resonance, or offset it for dissonant metallic textures. High FEEDBACK values near 0.95 create sustained, pitched ringing.
